Nelson’s 30-year battle with addiction started when he was just 10 years old. It took him into gang life, homelessness, prison and two strokes. But along the way, Nelson also became a father. And it was his deep desire to be the dad he never had that finally got his attention. Living in a hotel room and attempting to take care of 3 toddlers, Nelson realized his addiction was killing him and he cried out to God.
“I called CPS on myself,” says Nelson. “It was the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do. I told them I was a single father, and a drug addict, and I needed help.” Nelson has been clean and sober for the last 18 months, and he’s nearly halfway through the Rescue Mission’s program.
And now he’s reunited with his daughter, Neveah. Surrounded by encouragement and support, Nelson is finally becoming the dad he wants to be and is looking to the future.
“My ultimate goal is to help troubled youth,” says Nelson. “I have a fire and a desire to be someone in life, and God always knew I was going to do it.”
